Vegan Month of Food is over.

1 Nov

And, I missed it because my In-laws were in town.  They ruin everything!

I am joking.  We all had a really nice time.  It snowed a bit, and with family in town it almost felt like the holidays.

Admittedly, I probably had the holidays on my mind before the family and snow showed up, but I had been trying to put them out of my mind until today– because for some reason it seems less ridiculous to start thinking about Thanxmas on November 1st than October 31st.

It’s a delicate balance between keeping it simple and going completely, insanely over the top (and burning out quickly as a result).  Last Thanxvegan got so wild we had TWO seitan roasts [yes, that IS my idea of getting wild].  I can never find Field Roast products in my local stores, but I found their holiday roast at my local HFS.  Had to get it.  Couldn’t be helped.  At that point, I had already decided I need to try Joni’s Seitan En Croute.  I was between a roast and a hard place, and the only cure was more roast.

Obviously, on the scale of simple to crazeballs my leanings are a bit more towards crazeballs.  May this be the year I find a little more balance and simplicity.

TWO seitan roasts! You are (were) out of control!

Actually, that sounds very reasonable to me.

Wow, the roasts look fantastic. Great job!

I bought a field roast after thanksgiving for the sheer fact that it was there and so was I. I fully support all seitan roast craziness.

Two seitan roasts! That’s what my husband & I do every year for Christmas! We get a Tofurky one & a Redwood Foods one, neither have pastry though so that helps me justify it! I love that seitan en croute, it’s so fancy looking but so easy. I made it for Thanksgiving last year & it was delicious.

I agree about the En Croute. It really did look fancy with minimal effort. Also, I believe the consensus was we preferred it taste-wise over the Field Roast.

Thanxmas? Thanxvegan? Quickly jotting these words into my new repertoire. HAHA. I’m stealing them, if you don’t mind 🙂 But my one question to you is why does seitan gotsta have gluten, huh?? I find this completely unfair!!

No lie. Whenever I’m using seitan I say a little prayer I never develop a gluten allergy. That said, have you seen some of the gluten-free seitan-ish options people were posting during mofo? I’m very curious.

I haven’t seen any gluten-free options yet. Then again, I’m so new to the idea of seitan, tempeh, etc. so I probably wouldn’t recognize it if it hit me on the head 🙂
